Acute or Chronic?

Writer's picture: JenJen

A question I am asked frequently is whether a particular condition is acute or chronic.

A good guideline is to think about how long the condition has been present. Has it been a few days or weeks? It’s probably acute. Has it been longer? It’s probably chronic.

Acute conditions are things like colds, flu, or injuries. Taking a case for someone with an acute condition takes far less time than doing an intake for a chronic condition. There simply isn’t as much to consider if the illness hasn’t been around that long. Simple acutes can also be self-treated if you have a basic understanding of homeopathy and a good repertory. Be aware, however, of the difficulties in seeing yourself and close family members objectively. And, of course, always seek medical attention if symptoms are worrisome.

Chronic conditions have normally been around for a while. There might be long-standing emotional issues like depression or anxiety or difficulties with digestion or migraines or any number of things that showed up and stuck around. Most often there are multiple symptoms present in the same person. All of these symptoms together point to a remedy that fits the unique individual that is the patient. It is much more difficult to treat chronic conditions for yourself and your family than it is to treat acutes. Finding a well-trained practitioner is ideal.

Materia Medica

Cocculus indicus (Cocc): Often useful in conditions affecting the central nervous system. One of the first remedies to consider in progressive neurological disorders. There is a generalized weakness that first appears as over-excitedness but eventually becomes stupifaction. The underlying causes may be grief or long periods of caring for a loved one who has been sick. Thoughts slow down and time passes very quickly. A small amount of lost sleep results in out-of-proportion exhaustion. There will likely be vertigo, which makes the world spin and causes the patient to lie down in order to find relief. Sometimes useful for motion sickness from watching objects while riding in a car.
