Homeopathy in Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes a lot of changes. Some can be quite uncomfortable. Homeopathy is a wonderful way to alleviate symptoms and allow yourself to enjoy the transition into motherhood.

Morning sickness is very common at the beginning of pregnancy, usually starting between weeks four and seven, with the peak at about nine weeks. It’s believed that the rapid hormonal shifts of early pregnancy are to blame.

Fortunately, there are multiple remedies to consider to help alleviate nausea in pregnancy. Here are a few to consider:

Nux vomica (Nux-v): Bloating and constipation accompany the nausea. There may be dry heaves and a feeling of being hungover. The emotional state is irritable and impatient.

Sepia (Sep): Symptoms are worse in the evening. Exhaustion and bloating are likely. As with Nux, there is irritability, but it is focused on the partner and children rather than being more general, as with Nux.

Arsenicum (Ars): Diarrhea accompanies the nausea. If there is vomiting, it is burning and painful. There is a great deal of anxiety as well as a fear of eating because it may cause vomiting.

Ipecacuanha (Ipecac, Ip): Nausea is severe and lasts all day long. Vomiting does not relieve it. Rich foods and warmth aggravate.

Another pregnancy symptom is heartburn. This is most commonly caused by hormonal changes and the pressure of a growing uterus. Consider the following remedies for help:

Carbo vegetabilis (Carbo-veg, Carb-v): There is tremendous bloating accompanying the heartburn. Sour belching that gets worse with even the slightest amount of food along with a good deal of chilliness.

Nux vomica (Nux-v): Acidic heartburn is caused by overindulgence, coffee, or spicy foods. There is burning in the throat and often a cough along with it.

Pulsatilla (Puls): Eating greasy, fatty foods triggers the heartburn. There is belching of food and a bitter taste in the mouth.

Another common pregnancy complaint is hemorrhoids. Just as the pregnant uterus pushes upward and can cause heartburn, the downward pressure can cause or exacerbate hemorrhoids.

Aesculus Hippocastanum (Aesc): Hemorroids are external and painful during stool, with the pain continuing for a long time afterward. They do not bleed. The pains feel like sticks in the rectum or are very sharp, extending from the rectum to the lower back.

Aloe Socotrina (Aloe): When internal hemorrhoids protrude and resemble grapes. They are very sore and tender and might itch intesely. Cold applications ameliorate.

Hamamelis (Ham): For internal, painless, bleeding hemorrhoids.

Homeopathy is a wonderful way to support your body through the symptoms that often accompany pregnancy. These are just a few of the conditions that can be addressed with the proper remedy. Additionally, pregnancy is often an excellent time to work with a homeopath to find your constitutional remedy.
