Summer break is beginning for many children and families. This means more time outside playing and therefore more potential for injury. Not to worry! Homeopathy is extremely useful in treating minor injuries obtained through sports or play that might be a little too intense.
The remedy most people think of in relation to injury is Arnica Montana (Arn). It has a well-deserved reputation for its ability to help when there is bruising or muscular soreness. Arnica is the first remedy to consider when these are present. It is also useful after surgery and accidents with injury. In the latter case, the person may tell you they are fine when they are clearly not. They may also be irritable or anxious and/or have a fear of death.
Another remedy which is useful for injury is Aconite napellus (Acon). This remedy might be useful if the person appears to be going into shock. The symptoms come on suddenly and might be accompanied by nervous agitation. The pain is intolerable.
For injuries that are worse from motion, consider Bryonia alba (Bry). Regardless of the injury, if the person wants to stay still, as the slightest motion aggravates the symptoms. This can be true of sprains, strains, tendon injuries, or others. On the emotional plane, they may want to be left alone and are irritable and cold.
When injuries have impacted nerves, Hypericum perforatum (Hyp) is the first remedy to think of. It is particularly helpful for injuries to nerve-rich areas such as fingers, toes, teeth, neck, and back. It is also indicated for puncture wounds anywhere on the body. The quality of the pain is shooting and sharp, and the area may be very sensitive to the touch.
Another remedy for puncture wounds, such as a cat bite or a nail piercing the skin, is Ledum palustre (Led). It can also be helpful for insect bites and stings. The pain feels better with cold applications and the wound might appear swollen and purplish. The area of the wound may also feel cold.
Injuries that have damaged the periostium (bone covering) may be helped by Ruta graveolens (Ruta). It can also be helpful for tendon injuries. There is a great amount of stiffness and weakness.
A remedy known as “knitbone” is Symphytum officinale (Symph). It does exactly what its nickname indicates, which is to help bones knit back together. It can be used to help heal after a broken bone has been set. It can also be considered for eye injuries.
Homeopathy is a wonderful tool to help with all of these minor injuries. Please seek emergency care for things that are more serious! Enjoy your summer!
