Fever

One of the things that seems to strike fear into the hearts of all parents is when their child has a fever. The first thing most people will do is reach for something that will suppress it. This is completely understandable, as we have all been told throughout our lives that fevers are bad and dangerous. However, did you know that a large body of research shows that this is not the case?

A fever is part of what your body does when it is functioning well and fighting off an illness as it was meant to. Taking something in order to lower a fever (suppress it) takes away that important line of defense. Here’s what’s happening inside the body in order to elevate the temperature:

Small molecules known as pyrogens appear in the bloodstream. These can come from either external or internal sources. Toxins produced by bacteria or viruses are external. They can also be released internally as a normal part of the immune system response. As a result of the pyrogens, the hypothalamus is triggered to raise the temperature of the body. The increased temperature then stresses the pathogens and cells that have been infected. If we artificially lower the fever, the body loses this very important ability.

Homeopathy does not suppress fevers but rather works with the body in order to accomplish its goal of eliminating the pathogens it is fighting against. Remembering that a fever is just one symptom and the full picture must be considered, here are just a few remedies commonly used in fever:

Belladonna (Bell): The fever arrives suddenly and with intensity. The face is hot and red but the hands and feet are cold. Pupils dilate and the eyes glisten. The heat radiates off the body. Often someone will comment that they can feel the fever without even touching the person. This type of fever is sometimes accompanied by hallucinations or delusions.

Ferrum phosphoricum (Ferrum phos, Ferr-p): High fever that can be debilitating with only vague symptoms accompanying it. There may be circular (circumscribed) red patches on the cheeks.

Aconitum napellus (Aconite, Acon): This fever also comes on with suddenness and intensity. It is often accompanied by a tremendous fear of death or just overwhelming anxiety. The fever often occurs after a traumatic event or exposure to cold wind.

One more note about fever; if it is very high and/or prolonged, seek medical attention, as your body is not effectively utilizing its immune system and may need support.
