Genus Epidemicus

Genus epidemicus… an unusual term. What does it mean?

It refers to the selection of a homeopathic medicine which is most closely aligned to the symptoms experienced by large numbers of people in a particular outbreak of disease. This may be only one remedy, or it may be a small group of remedies. If the same disease occurs in different places or at different times, there may be different remedies needed for each individual outbreak.

One of the most often cited uses of this approach was by Hahnemann in Scarlet Fever. He observed the symptoms shared by the majority of patients presenting with the disease and found that Belladonna covered most of these similar symptoms. Homeopaths (as well as some forward thinking allopaths) used Belladonna prophylactically to prevent the disease in those who were or who may have been exposed to it. Numbers taken from ten allopaths’ practices who decided to use Belladonna showed that out of 1646 children given this remedy, only 123 developed it. At the time, there was a 90% chance of contracting the disease, so this is very significant.

Although the genus epidemicus covers the majority of patients, there are always some who need a different remedy. As with anything in homeopathy, the symptoms must match the given remedy.
