Homeopathic Aggravations

Writer: JenJen

Homeopathic medicines have no side effects. It is, however, possible to see what we call aggravations. Aggravations are not harmful or permanent, but they can be annoying.

An aggravation happens when a remedy causes a temporary increase of symptoms already experienced by the patient. For example, someone who has nausea might experience an increase in that feeling after taking a properly prescribed remedy. Aggravations are not pleasant, but they should always be manageable. They are actually generally thought of as a good thing, as it indicates the remedy is working on those symptoms.

There are a couple schools of thought on how to work with aggravations. One is to let them resolve on their own no matter the intensity. I have seen homeopaths encourage clients to work through some pretty intense aggravations. This is not my approach. If a client of mine experiences a worsening of symptoms and they report that it is tolerable and not interfering with their life, we will continue as before. If they find that it does interfere in a significant way, we will immediately alter the dosing of the remedy in order to eliminate the aggravation. The remedy will continue to work, but the client does not have to deal with very annoying or painful symptoms. Gentle healing should be our ultimate goal.

Materia medica

Kali carbonicum (Kali carb, Kali-c): The personality of someone benefiting from Kali carb is usually quite rigid. They follow all the rules and see most everything in black and white. They are loyal and proper and dislike change. A Kali carb patient is usually chilly and feels worse in the cold. The eyelids often look swollen. It is very common for this person to have trouble sleeping and to wake between 2:00 and 4:00 AM or to wake four hours after falling asleep. In this remedy picture, the pathology tends to be confined to the body rather than progressing to mental states such as severe depression.
