How are remedies made?

Writer: JenJen

Remedy is the term for the substances we use to facilitate healing through homeopathy. All homeopathic labs follow the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States (HPUS), which provides strict guidelines. http://www.hpus.com/what-is-the-hpus.php

Remedies are made from a wide variety of substances, including plants, minerals, and animals. Preparation involves first making the mother tincture by dissolving the substance in alcohol if it is soluble. If the substance is insoluble, it is triturated (ground) with lactose until a liquid dilution can be prepared. Then one part mother tincture is combined with 99 parts alcohol/water. The resulting mixture is succussed (shaken by impacting a surface) and the result is a remedy with a potency of 1C. The process is repeated for each potency step.

The most common potencies I tend to use are 30C, 200C, and 1M, but they are available in lower potencies as well as much higher ones. To reach a potency of 30C, the original substance is diluted and succussed 30 times. For a 200C, it is done 200 times. A 1M has the process repeated 1,000 times. The more times a remedy is diluted and succussed, the stronger its action. For X potencies, one part mother tincture per 9 parts alcohol/water is used. (I tend not to use X potencies aside from cell salts) The more times the solution is diluted and succussed, the stronger the action of the remedy. Another potency scale is LM, which I will talk about at a later time.

Let's walk through the process with a remedy called Pulsatilla in a 30C. This remedy is made from a plant known as the windflower or meadow anenome. The whole plant is obtained and immersed in alcohol where it sits under climate controlled conditions until it is ready to be used. This is the mother tincture. At that point, one part of the solution is combined with 99 parts alcohol/water and succussed repeatedly, resulting in Pulsatilla 1C. For the second dilution, one part of the Pulsatilla 1C liquid is combined with 99 parts alcohol/water and it is succussed again. This results in Pulsatilla 2C. The process is repeated 28 more times, until we have Pulsatilla 30C. The liquid is then sprayed onto pellets and packaged.

This is all not very exciting for some, but as a complete homeopathy nerd I find it fascinating. Hopefully a few of you will as well!
