Proper Use and Care of Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathy is different than any other system of medicine. It’s unfortunately not as easy as taking one tablet twice a day for two weeks. Dosing recommendations are based on the client’s personal sensitivities, the intensity of the issue, and other factors. For me, one of those factors is what my client prefers. Some have an easy time taking a water dose every other day. Others will not remember to take their remedy at all if that is the recommendation and therefore do best with dry dosing. Initial prescriptions are always considered a jumping off point. It’s very common to change potencies and/or dosing frequency as you work with your remedy and we see the response.

Some rules that apply to all homeopathic remedies and potencies (according to my own practice) are:

Store your remedies out of direct sunlight and away from excessive heat and moisture.

Avoid touching remedies with bare hands. Instead, tip the pellets into the cap and then into your mouth. The reason for this is the medicine is sprayed onto the outside of the pellet and touching them may make them less effective. If it’s someone else’s remedy you may also inadvertently get a dose yourself through the skin.

Take your remedy about fifteen minutes either side of eating or drinking anything other than water.

Keep water potencies in the refrigerator for about five days before remaking them. If you add a couple drops of clear alcohol they will keep their potency in the refrigerator for several weeks.

Avoid strong smelling essential oils, as these may antidote remedies; particularly eucalyptus, peppermint, and tea tree. Mint in toothpaste and similar things are fine as long as they are used at least fifteen minutes before or after taking your remedy.

Dosing and potency will vary widely depending on the situation, the person, and the remedy. Please follow the instructions given by your homeopath.

Materia medica

Euphrasia (Euphr): This is a remedy often used in hay fever. The symptoms will normally affect the eyes more than other areas. The discharge from the nose will be bland and discharge from the eyes will be profuse and burning or stinging. (We find the opposite in Allium cepa; burning or stinging discharge from the nose and bland discharge from the eyes.) There is a good deal of photophobia and blinking. Euphrasia may also be thought of if there is an injury to the eye. If there is a cough it will be only in the daytime and will be better lying in bed at night.
