What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of medicine founded in 1789 by Samuel Hahnemann.  Hahnemann was a medical doctor who became disillusioned by the medicine of his time, which included such barbaric practices as administering high doses of mercury and bloodletting. These practices often resulted in the death of the patient, which obviously is the opposite of what one would hope to achieve.

Hahnemann first experimented with Cinchona bark, which is the source of quinine, a substance used to treat Malaria. He discovered that taking the drug in the absence of symptoms actually caused the symptoms it treated. This led to the development of the law of similars and the law of infintesimals. Hahnemann began treating patients with very small amounts of substances and found that by focusing on presenting symptoms, as well as the patient as a whole, he was able to provide effective treatment for disease without the unfortunate side effects of the medicine of the time. His book, Organon of the Healing Art, provides the basis of all homeopathic practice, even today.

How is Homeopathy Practiced?

In 1830 the first homeopathic college opened in the United States and by the early 1900s there were several of these colleges, as well as multiple homeopathic hospitals.  Always being heavily criticized by mainstream medicine, the last of these colleges closed in 1920. Afterward, despite an amazing track record of healing, homeopathy fell out of favor and only fairly recently has begun to be sought out by the public once again. The practice of classical homeopathy involves the practitioner spending time with the client recording emotional, mental, and physical symptoms and using those symptoms to find

a single remedy that best fits the client as a whole.

In addition to being specific and scientific, homeopathy is truly an art and so the practice of homeopathy varies from one practitioner to another. The chosen remedy stimulates a personʼs own healing abilities. Dosage frequency and potency will vary from person to person.
