The most important part of a homeopath's job is listening to their client. An initial consultation typically lasts from one to two hours and the focus should be entirely on the client. Afterward you may feel as though you have just had a counseling appointment.
In the time you spend with your homeopath, you will be asked about all manner of symptoms. Don't be afraid to share things which may seem unrelated. Often those seemingly unrelated things are what lead us to the correct remedy. Emotional and mental symptoms are equally as important as physical symptoms. If it is a constitutional appointment, you will be asked about early life experiences and family history as well as for more current information. The homeopath takes note of all you say and all they observe. Even they way you dress or carry yourself may provide clues to the remedy that most closely fits you as a whole person.
In classical homeopathy, we are looking for one single remedy which is the best fit for everything that makes you, you. Each remedy has its own symptom picture which the homeopath uses to accomplish this. Some homeopaths decide on a remedy in the same conversation, but in my own practice I almost always take the information I receive from my client and spend time reviewing it and studying before deciding on a remedy. Experience has taught me this is much more effective.
You will probably be asked to schedule a follow-up appointment. This is so the homeopath can make sure the remedy is working as intended. It also allows them to provide any necessary guidance as far as how often to take your remedy and whether the potency is correct or should be changed.
If you are seeing a homeopath for an acute situation, you can expect a remedy selection right away (this is one time I don't wait on determining the remedy). If the remedy is correct, you should expect some level of improvement fairly quickly. Follow-up after an acute appointment is usually as simple as a phone call to make sure you are feeling better.
This is just a brief overview of what to expect. Every homeopath has their own style of practice, but the basic tenets are the same.
