Who was James Tyler Kent?

Writer: JenJen

Kent was one of the most well known Hahnemannian homeopaths. He was a doctor in the US in the 1800s. When his wife Lucy became ill and did not respond to conventional treatment, she requested a homeopath, and after being treated experienced a full recovery. This was the turning point for Kent, who decided to change his focus from allopathy to homeopathy. He was a prolific writer and teacher, who devoted a tremendous amount of energy to the study and practice of homeopathy. He was so passionate that he couldn't help but engage in the occasional tirade against the allopathic practice of medicine, which became something of a trademark for him.

The main published works by Kent include his repertory, Lectures on Homeopathic Philosophy, and Materia Medica. His approach made homeopathy more understandable and accessible and his works are still in use today. His Materia Medica is available online https://www.vithoulkas.com/learning-tools/online-materia-medica/materia-medica-by-Kent

He is known for high potency prescribing with a focus on the mental and emotional symptoms. His favored potencies were high to very high. This was an unusual approach at the time. Those who follow his methods are sometimes referred to as Kentian homeopaths. During the time he was teaching, a rift between low potency (less than 30C) and high potency (over 30C) prescribers developed. There is still a good deal of disagreement on this topic in the homeopathic community today.

Regardless of whether or not homeopaths utilize his approach to prescribing, all can agree that he remains a tremendous influence on homeopathy around the world.
