World Homeopathy Awareness Week

Writer: JenJen

Happy World Homeopathy Awareness Week!

April 10th is the birthday of the founder of homeopathy, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. He would have been 268 years old now. He was not the first to discover the principal of like cures like, but he was the first and only one to develop it into a system of true healing.

As part of the extraordinary amount of time and effort he devoted to homeopathy, he conducted what are known as provings. The first proving was made using Cinchona bark and thousands of remedies have followed.

Provings must be conducted exactly as instructed in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States. An extremely simplistic explanation is that they are double blind with the use of control (placebo). Subjects are chosen based upon current health and ability to report symptoms, with the goal of choosing a wide variety of subjects and a sufficient sample size. All subjects are given either the remedy being studied or placebo. Neither the subjects nor the supervisors are aware of which one is being taken by any of the participants. Throughout the proving, the subjects record all changes on the mental, physical, and emotional planes. After the proving concludes, the symptoms are gathered and used to compile information about the remedy, which is analyzed and added to our materia medica.

It’s an amazing process to be involved in. What could be better than witnessing the birth of a new medicine? Or adding to our existing knowledge of one of our thousands of existing remedies?

Staphysagria (Staph) is useful for people who are very sweet and accommodating but there is a great deal of anger under the surface. There is often a history of abuse during which they have been unable to stand up for themselves. When the anger does surface they may tremble and throw things. Depression and low self esteem are common in this remedy. It is difficult for them to sleep at night despite the fact that they feel sleepy all day.
