Homeopathy for Acute Injury

Writer: JenJen

This is one area where homeopathy is better known. The remedy Arnica is used very commonly and with a lot of success for certain injuries. It’s even fairly common for sports trainers to carry it with them for use on injured athletes. It can be taken internally or used as a cream on bruised areas. Let’s look a little deeper into this remedy as well as some other remedies which can be used in case of injury. And of course if there is a severe injury, medical assistance should be sought immediately.

Arnica montana (Arn): The person needing Arnica might be irritable, anxious, and afraid of death. At the other extreme, they may insist that nothing is wrong, despite all evidence to the contrary. It is the first remedy to be considered if there is evident bruising (deeper bruising may point to Bellis), as well as general injuries to the soft tissues. The predominant sensation of pain is soreness. It may be used to aid recovery after surgery, or healing from injuries due to overexertion.

Bellis perennis (Bell-p): Injuries to deeper tissues. This remedy may be useful after a car accident or particularly difficult childbirth. There may be a sensation of stiffness or coldness. Rubbing the affected area may give some relief. If Arnica doesn’t help, consider this remedy.

Aconitum napellus (Aconite, Acon): This is the first remedy to consider if an injured person appears to be going into shock. There is anxiety sometimes to the point of panic as well as nervousness and agitation. There may also be great irritability and intolerance of outside stimuli such as noise or lights. If there is pain it is intolerable, making the patient feel desperate.

Bryonia alba (Bry): This remedy is useful for injuries which are worse from motion. It might be a sprain, strain, or a tendon injury, but regardless of what it is, if motion causes significant worsening, it should be considered. The patient is also chilly, irritable, and wants to be left alone.

Hypericum perforatum (Hyp): Well known as a nerve remedy. It should be considered for injuries to the fingers, toes, teeth, neck, and back. It is also indicated in injuries from a puncture such as a nail going through the skin or a cat bite. Pains are sharp and shooting and the injured area is extremely sensitive to touch.

Ledum palustre (Led): The first remedy to consider for a puncture wound. It is also an effective remedy for insect bites and stings. Very cold applications give the person some relief. The wound might appear purple and swollen.

Ruta graveolens (Ruta): Useful for injuries which have damaged the periosteum (the covering of the bone) or which have injured or bruised tendons. There may be a good deal of stiffness and weakness.

Symphytum officinale (Symph): The other name for this remedy is knitbone. It can be used to help speed the healing of a broken bone after it has been set. It can also be considered for eye injuries.
