Homeopathy for Animals

Can you use remedies for your pets? Yes!

Giving animals remedies is a great way to see homeopathy work without all the confusion that might come with giving remedies to people. As humans, we are constantly analyzing our own thoughts, feelings, and physical symptoms, which can affect the case. We see our own symptoms through the filter of societal, family, and other expectations. Patients may not feel comfortable fully expressing symptoms, or may not even know they have particular symptoms if they have been very suppressed. We get used to chronic conditions, whether emotional or physical, and don’t pay attention to the point that it may not even seem relevant to report a particular symptom to the homeopath. Animals do not have these hang-ups, which makes homeopathy wonderfully effective and very quick to act.

It’s not all easy, however. Animals do not have language that we understand easily, so we have to prescribe using what we see while being as careful as possible to not interpret according to our own expectations. It’s the same with very young children. With a young child, the report of a parent is invaluable. A caregiver’s reporting of symptoms is also extremely helpful in the case of a pet, although the bond is different than with a child.

When people ask me to treat their pets, I am happy to do it with the understanding that I am a people homeopath with less experience treating animals than humans. Having said that, I have seen numerous homeopathic cures in animals I have treated, which is very rewarding. There are a limited number of homeopathic veterinarians. It would be wonderful to see those numbers increase!

Materia medica

Silica (sil) is useful when weakness, whether physical or mental, is pronounced. The patient is so full of doubt in regard to their abilities that they attempt to compensate and become full of anxieties. Physically, stamina is quite low and may result in frequent illness or infection of the skin and other areas. Nails, teeth, and bones are often weak or malformed. This patient is most often cold and feels worse on exposure to cold weather. They also may have a smaller frame with delicate features.
