Homeopathy for Muscle and Joint Pain

As with everything else in homeopathy, pain must be treated according to the specific symptoms experienced by the patient. It can be difficult to describe pain, even for seasoned homeopaths. I often give people a list of various descriptions to choose from, always being careful not to lead the case. Pain might be burning, bursting, pulsing, throbbing, cutting, twisting, gnawing, etc. It’s also important to look at other symptoms occurring with the pain. Maybe there is a headache or nausea when the pain appears. Or perhaps there are emotional symptoms such as fear or sadness. All of these taken together give us a picture to work with and prescribe from.

All of our remedies address pain. They work to heal the underlying issue and in that way provide relief. When there is pain in the muscles and joints, there are certain remedies we can look to first.

Arnica montana (Arn) is the most commonly used and well known remedy for this type of pain. Many sports trainers carry this in their bags to assist injured athletes. It is very helpful for bruises, strains and sprains, and can even be used post operatively to speed healing and relieve pain. The patient feels bruised, as if they have been beaten. Everything feels too hard, even the bed. They may also insist they are fine and do not need to see a doctor, even though it is evident that they are not fine.

Bryonia alba (Bry) is often used in rheumatic pain. The most well known keynote of this remedy should be present in order for it to be effective. This is aggravation from motion. While the patient is still, they experience notable relief. Whenever there is motion, the pain returns or worsens. These patients are typically irritable and would rather be left alone.

Ledum (Led) is often used for arthritic pain, most commonly in the lower extremities. From there, the pain may move upward. The pain and stiffness is relieved by cold or cold applications. The relief from cold is often tremendous

Rhus toxicodendron (Rhus tox, Rhus-t) is another remedy very often used in arthritic conditions. A very important aspect of this remedy is relief from motion (opposite Bryonia). The patient may be in pain on first moving, but as they continue the pain lessens. Getting wet and being in a draft can aggravate the pain.

Calcarea phosphorica (Calc phos, Calc-p) helps when joints are stiff from cold and drafts. The bones might feel achy. There is mental and physical weakness.

Pulsatilla (Puls) is useful for rheumatic pain which shifts around (wanders). The pain is most often found in the heels, hips, and knees. The patient may weep when describing their pain and desire attention and affection, which helps them feel better. Open air ameliorates, particularly when it’s cooler, and warm or stuffy rooms aggravate.

Causticum (Caust) can help when joints are stiff and tendons seem shortened, possibly even drawing the limb out of shape. Pains are worse from cold, over use, bathing, and dry weather. There is a good deal of restlessness, which is most likely to manifest at night.

Calcarea carbonica (Calc carb, Calc-c) is particularly useful in arthritis affecting the knees. Muscles are weak and might be repeatedly strained or sprained; especially the ankles. The pain is worse in the cold and damp, from exertion, and from hanging down. The patient might feel overworked and overwhelmed.

Colchicum (Colch) has violent pains such that the patient can’t bear to have the painful part touched or to have anyone near them. The pain wanders; often from left to right. It is particularly focused on the smaller joints such as the wrists, ankles, fingers, and toes. Pains in the joints are worse from the slightest motion.
