When taking a remedy, what potency should you take and how often?

This is never an easy question to answer. The most accurate answer is, it depends. Your homeopath chooses a potency based on your personal sensitivity, past experiences, current symptoms, and the remedy itself. The goal is generally to avoid unnecessary aggravations while facilitating a healing response from the body as quickly as possible.

Some homeopaths use only particular potencies and particular dosing schedules, but many of us believe a remedy should be taken "as needed". That seems like a simple idea, but in practice it is more difficult than it sounds. Most of us are used to taking medication or supplements in a certain dosage a particular number of times in a day or in a week. Homeopathy does not work that way. In order to determine when a dose should be repeated, you would pay attention to your symptoms and repeat when they start to return without resolving on their own in a relatively short period of time. This may be weeks later if using a high potency such as a 1M in a chronic situation, or hours if using a low potency such as a 12C in an acute situation. Remedies can also be taken as dry pellets, in water, or using an entirely liquid dosing scale (LM).

A relevant note about potency and repetition is that in an epidemic there are different guidelines. Any potency available is a good potency. Repetition is generally more frequent in this situation as well. When using a remedy prophylactically in an epidemic, it is normally taken a prescribed number of times and in particular potencies.

We have innumerable potencies to choose from, so there is a certain amount of guesswork involved when deciding which one to use. Fortunately, it is easy to change potencies whenever necessary. Speak with your homeopath if you are unsure about when to take your remedy.
