There are as many ways to run a homeopathic practice as there are homeopaths. Each practitioner brings their own ideas and idiosyncrasies with them. An important question every homeopath needs to ask themselves is how much support are they willing and able to give to their clients?
Boundaries are important, no question. But how firm should they be? Some homeopaths do not provide any support at all outside of scheduled appointments. Some will speak with clients via phone, text, or email for a fee. While I understand both of these approaches, I disagree with them. If we lived in a country where most of the population understood homeopathy and how to use it, I might have a similar approach. That is not reality and the way I practice reflects that.
I make myself available to my clients. This is not to say that I am at their beck and call or that I take cases at odd hours or that I will answer my phone in the middle of the night. That is not the case at all. But I will text, email, or call my clients at my earliest opportunity in order to answer their questions related to work we have done together. I cannot imagine it working well any other way. Most of my clients do not have the support of family or friends who understand homeopathy, and even if they do, I prefer that they touch base with me before making changes in remedies or dosing or anything else related to that.
When I was in the early stages of my practice, I treated a client with Veratrum 30C. He had strict instructions regarding dosing, but he reported later that he felt so good after the first dose that he decided more must be better. Over the next few days he took multiple doses beyond what he had been instructed to take. He eventually found himself with a heck of an aggravation, feeling absolutely miserable. I happened to see his wife and told her to have him call me. He did and I immediately recognized what was happening. I told him how to lessen the aggravation, which can be done quickly and easily. He had almost immediate relief. What would have happened if I were not available? If he had had to wait for his next appointment he may have felt terrible the entire time and decided he did not want to continue. Because I had the opportunity to support him, he continued and saw some truly amazing results.
Of course there are limits. If it seems that we need to sit down and take another case I will let the client know. But any support that takes me mere minutes is not difficult and as long as it leads to more help for more people I will continue providing that support.
Materia medica
Pulsatilla (Puls) is one of the more recognized remedies in our materia medica. It is gentle and yielding. A child who would benefit from this remedy clings to their mother and will run to her for comfort at the drop of a hat. They weep easily, whether child or adult. Consolation helps them feel better and they will actively ask for it. This person loves to be outdoors and feels a great deal of relief from being outside. Thirstlessness is notable. They may drink because they feel they need to, but they do not feel a great deal of actual thirst. This is a remedy to consider for hormonal issues, especially during pregnancy and menopause if the symptoms fit. There may be recurring ear infections with a great deal of pain which is worse at night and for heat. Cravings might include cream, cheese, butter, or cold food.
